HEAVY RAINS HAVE TURNED TORRENTIAL, THE VIOLENT storm unseasonable for fall, with high winds stripping trees of any leaves left and thunder cracking like a war going on. Water sprays the undercarriage of the SUV and splashes the glass, and Benton seems miles from me as I drive through the dark puddled streets of mid-Cambridge.
âItâs common sense that he canât be involved,â he says from the passengerâs seat, where heâs alert to his surroundings and not looking at me.
âWhose common sense?â I try not to sound tense.
âDo you want him leaving his DNA inside her house?â
âHopefully he wouldnât, but of course not.â I try to sound reasonable.
Bentonâs phone glows in the dark, and he types something on it.
âAfter heâs possibly already transferred his DNA to her personal effects, to her clothing?â He returns the phone to his lap. âBecause Iâm betting he handled all sorts of things.â
Wipers thud and the defrost blasts.
âI donât care what protective shit he had on,â Benton then says. âThese days you can get DNA from air.â
âNot quite,â I reply. âBut he shouldnât search her house.â I agree with that. âAlthough thereâs no proof he knew her, ever met her, or had a clue someone stole her identity on Twitter. Thereâs no shred of evidence heâs done anything wrong.â
âIt doesnât look good.â
âIt looks like what it is.â My anger glints. âSomeone intended to implicate him.â
âWe shouldnât do anything to make it look worse.â
âSo I lose my chief investigator because he got set up and made a fool of by whoeverâs involved?â Iâm frustrated, on the verge of furious, that the FBI suddenly assumes it has a say in how I run my office.
Iâm angered by the suggestion that investigators I train leave their DNA everywhere.
âHe was set up because he was an intended target,â I add.
âHe needs to stay out of this case. He needs to stay away from the CFC for a while.â
âThatâs what you think or what your colleagues think?â Lightning flashes and the sky looks bruised.
âItâs not for me to decide how Marino should be handled. Itâs not appropriate for me to decide, in light of personal connections. In light of our history.â Benton doesnât look at me, and I know when heâs wounded.
âIt seems if anyone should decide, itâs the one who knows him best.â
âYes, I know him,â he says.
âYou certainly do. And your colleagues donât.â
âNot the way I know him. Youâre right about that. And maybe you should think about what I know.â
âI should think about what you know of Marinoâs flaws.â Itâs obvious what heâs alluding to, and I canât stop this from where itâs going.
âFlaws. Christ,â he says.
âDonât do this, Benton.â
âYes, flaws,â he says.
âGoddammit, stop.â
âWhat a way to put it,â he says, in the voice of anger, of hurt.
âYouâre finally paying him back?â I ask.
âNothing more than a flaw or two.â
âYouâre going to pay him back at last for a night when he was drunk and on medication?â I go ahead and say it. âWhen he was out of his mind?â
âThe oldest excuse in the history of the world.
